Sarvok groaned. His muscles flexed, and the veins in his neck bulged. His red face grew even redder. He strained with all his might and snapped the linkage on the handcuffs. His arms swung free. The beast coiled back his fist and swung at Max.

Max ducked as the wrecking ball fist careened toward her. It whooshed overhead and smacked into the metal bulkhead. The alien’s metacarpals cracked and crumbled. He growled in agony and shook his wrist, trying to dissipate the pain that throbbed in his hand.

Max added to his pain by kicking him in the groin. He doubled over, and Max kneed him again in the ribs. It knocked the wind out of the big fellow. Max drove her elbow down into the alien’s spine. He fell forward and crashed into the wall.

That would have been enough to put most people down for a long time. But the alien staggered to his feet, spun around, and squared off against Max. Rage filled his eyes. He snarled, displaying his sharp teeth. He looked like a bull ready to charge.

He did just that.

The cell wasn’t wide enough to avoid the steamroller heading toward Max. The beast plowed into her like a lineman and slammed her against the bulkhead.

Air rushed from Max’s lungs. She tried to suck in a breath, but the alien punched her in the stomach. She felt like she had been hit by a cinderblock. She doubled over with pain.

The beast grabbed her by the collar and slammed her head first into the steel door.

THUNK!

Pain filled Max’s skull and shot down her spine. She collapsed to the ground. Her vision blurred. Before she could stagger to her feet, the alien kicked her in the ribs. Each blow felt like a knife to her thoracic cavity. Ribs crackled, sounding like stalks of celery snapping in half.

Curled on the ground, Max still hadn’t been able to take a full breath—and the alien showed no sign of letting up.

The blaring alarms flooded the housing unit. The muffled sounds of chaos filtered in from the General Population housing pod—screams and shouts. Banging and clanking. It sounded like a full-scale riot was in effect.

Max grabbed the alien’s foot as it slammed into her chest. She hugged it, not letting it go. She wasn’t about to let the goon kick her again. With all her might she twisted the alien’s foot clockwise until she heard ligaments snap. Then she yanked his foot at an unnatural angle and swept him from his feet. He fell backward, slamming his head against the bulkhead.

Max pounced on top of him and drove her elbow into the bridge of his nose, shattering it. Green blood splattered. Once Max had the advantage, she never let up. She administered a ruthless beating, until the beast was unconscious.

She finally stopped pummeling him with her fists and staggered to her feet. Her chest heaved for breath. Each inhalation triggered sharp pain in her rib cage. She had a knot on her head the size of a baseball.
